How to support a friend with their mental health (year 9 and above)

How to support a friend with their mental health (year 9 and above)

This class aims to help young people have conversations about mental health in a way that is productive and safe. We explore the inherent limitations of language and how we can understand each other better and show genuine empathy. We look at the role dopamine plays in brain health and how showing empathy positively impacts dopamine secretion.

We create a conversation ‘toolkit’ containing tips for getting a friend to open up and the best things to say when they do and then put them into practice during a role play exercise.

Most importantly, we understand where the role of a friend begins and ends, emphasising that we cannot ‘fix’ the mental health issues of people we love.

We learn the importance of safeguarding our own mental health and of signposting to reputable further sources of support and advice.

The class was designed for years 9-13 (age 13-18). It is tailored for each age group. It can be presented either as an interactive workshop, or assembly style.

Key Themes: Peer Support, Mental Health, Friendship.
